Over the last few months I have started to use Facebook on a more regular basis, mostly as quite a number of my friends have migrated their networking to the platform. While I enjoy the applications and networking on Facebook, I really cant stand the targeted advertisements.
My public profile notes that I am male, single and interested in women for friendship. As a result, I am seeing targeted advertisements for dating websites as the bulk of the advertisements on the website.
One of the advertisements is titled ‘19 and Still Single’. This ad is most annoying on two levels. The first being that the advertisement is plain insulting. I don’t appreciate an advertisement passing comment on my relationship status. It implies that to still be single at 19 is a bad thing. Perhaps in medieval England but get with the times.
My second concern is that Facebook appears to be offering up advertisers more information about me than Im offering up on my profile. My birthdate on my profile is listed as July 27th, sans year - yet some how these advertises know that Im 19.
I’ve gathered together some of the ads I see almost every time I long into Facebook - tell me if you would be happy being harassed with these each and every time you leave a wall-posting on a friends profile…
I’ve emailed Facebook with my concerns, I’ll update this post if/when they respond.
One Response for "Facebook, leave me alone!"
Heaven forbid someone be 19 and actually…oh, I don’t know, say focusing on your education or situating your life. I had a friend that dated through one of the sites, and she was young and attractive, in her younger 20’s. Some of the stories she told me about people she met are out of this world. People present themselves on a profile however they want, or rather what they wish they were. Meeting them in real life? A whole different story!
