For the most part I do my best to avoid writing speculative posts, mostly as I fear looking like a right idiot of I’m wrong. But in the land of Apples and iPhones it is commonplace to put aside any inhibition and run wild with rumor and speculation. So here goes…
I think it is ’safe’ to state that Steve Jobs will announce a 3G equipped iPhone on June 9th. There is no doubt that it will be 3G as Steve did all but announce this along with the SDK.
When?
More open to speculation is the date that we - the general Apple lovin’ public - will be able to get our hands on the device. It is rumored that Apple are mailing Apple Stores and Resellers unmakred brown boxes marked not to be opened until June 10th. So does that mean the iPhone will be in our hands on June 10th? I doubt it.
If you remember the March presentation on the SDK and 2.0 firmware, Steve Jobs clearly stated that the 2.0 firmware was coming at the end of June. That’s right, the end of June. Would Apple really launch the second generation iPhone with first generation firmware for users to upgrade just weeks later at home? I think not.
So where does that leave us? Well, on June 9th Steve Jobs will announce the 3G iPhone. On June 9th/10th Apple Stores will open up unmarked boxes which contain demo iPhones to go on display. And on 24th June you’ll be able to get your very own iPhone 2.
Pricing
Now on to the pricing. There has been a lot of talk about a $200 / £100 iPhone. You wish! The cost, I thing, will match the current prices, dropping to $200 / £100 with carrier subsidies.
That’s my two cents. Tell me what you are thinking in the comments!

This sounds like the holiday season. Do not open till Christmas….er…June 10 I mean. The iPhone is such a mysterious entity. Great marketing though, the buzz and the chatter are what made it so hot.
It seems to be the marketing tricks working for iPhone. The buzz and hype is created very smartly. This has helped the speculation. Secondly the speculation would be there where there’s lots of interest and demand and that people are eager to hear about the stuff.
Speculation, speculation…that’s all we have really.. Like you said, in the land of Apples and iPhones it is commonplace to feel this way. But sooner or later it has to happen.
