Everything Else

Orange and White Open DNS Logo

A while ago I wrote about a few problems I was having with OpenDNS.  Not because OpenDNS are in anyway a bad operation, to the contrary they are ‘law abiding’ eCitizens – that was the problem.

OpenDNS is, in theory, faster that using your ISP for your starting point online.  Instead of being passed about from DNS server to DNS server that don’t have the information required to help you on your way, you are connected directly to OpenDNS who operate a massive DNS cache to speed up your online computing.

It is fairly simple, OpenDNS are located geographically closer to you online and thus the time that DNS requests take is greatly reduced.  Neat huh?

The OpenDNS offer a range of tools to keep you safe online, for example a free phishing protection system that will display a page to warn you of a suspected page prior to you actually loading it.

But that is not why OpenDNS rock.  A few days ago, John from OpenDNS wrote to me with regards to my post damming OpenDNS.  My first reaction was, ‘Oh shit Ross, better check your post of defamatory comments’. But that was not why John was writing.

He wrote to help me out.  He explained to me what the issue was and what I was experiencing what I was experiencing.  All in all John was really helpful.

If you have the time, look up OpenDNS and try them out.  I’ve never turned back.
